Introduction

For seven seasons of the primetime hit show, “Cheers,” the lovable, quirky—and slightly nitwitted—Woody Boyd, played by Woody Harrelson, came through the bar doors, usually with a smile, a joke or a dilemma.

“Cheers” was undoubtedly Woody Harrelson’s big break, setting him up for success on the Hollywood circuit. Woody Harrelson net worth skyrocketed because of it, catapulting him to millionaire status.

Woody Harrelson’s relatability is in his ability to choose unforgettable roles and kill them. He is upfront, intriguing and somewhat of a hippie at heart; actually, he calls himself an anarchist.

A man of complexity, Woody Harrelson captivates audiences on and off the screen.

Total Anarchy

Woody Harrelson is no stranger to legal issues. He considers himself an anarchist, after all.

For over two decades, he’s been in and out of legal trouble. In 1982, he was taken into custody by Ohioan authorities. Harrelson was charged with disorderly conduct after he was caught dancing with reckless abandon in the street.

He was arrested in Kentucky in 1996. He was accused of being in possession of hemp seeds. Come to find out, Harrelson was conducting a prank-like experiment. Charges were dropped.

Woody Harrelson carried his mischief into the new millennium. He was arrested in 2002 and 2008 for a high-speed chase in a taxi and assaulting a member of the paparazzi, respectively.

The 2008 case was dismissed two years later. He paid off the defendant in the 2002 occurrence in a secret settlement.

Early Life

Born on July 23, 1961, Woodrow “Woody” Tracy Harrelson had a conflicting background. His mother, Diane Harrelson, née Oswald, a Presbyterian nurse, raised Woody and his brothers up “in the faith.”

His dad, Charles Voyde Harrelson, on the other hand, served a life sentence in the penitentiary where he died in 2007.

Although he grew up in poverty, Woody Harrelson got into Hanover College in Indiana. He graduated with his BA in 1983.

Harrelson recalls a story from his days at Hanover College where he encountered then-student Vice President Pence.

“I knew him, yeah. We were both very religious. It was a Presbyterian college at the time, and I was there on a Presbyterian scholarship, and he was involved with the church activities.

I was actually considering being a minister and then I just kind of went a different way…I actually quite liked him. I thought he was a pretty good guy. He’s, you know, very religious. Very committed.

Seeing as how I’m not quite in that ballpark now, I don’t know how we’d get along, ’cause I think he’s still quite religious and just a whole different brand of religious. That kind of fervor that you really don’t want.”

Personal Life

Woody Harrelson’s first marriage lasted ten months. He met his second wife, Laura Harrelson, née Louie, in the 80s. They didn’t hook up until decades later.

The two share three children. Deni is their eldest child. Zoe and Makani are their youngest daughters. They live in Maui, Hawaii.

Harrelson’s greatest joy is fatherhood. He said, “It’s the best thing going, parenthood.”

After the birth of his first daughter, he spoke vulnerably. “I remember my daughter Deni coming along, and she was so pure and caring of everybody and everything.

And somehow, this little being managed to get around all the obstacles – the gun turrets, the walls, the moats, the sentries – that were wrapped around my heart. My heart at that time needed her…”

Admittedly, somewhat of an overprotective dad, Harrelson said, “I used to live in Los Angeles, but I didn’t want my kids to grow up in the thick of the obsession with movie-making. There’s a lot of sensationalism and superficiality.

I wanted to take my kids out of that and raise ’em up elsewhere, and I wanted to stop being preoccupied with whether my star is on the rise or the descent.

I can’t imagine having a much greater life, and I don’t want to be preoccupied with things that don’t matter.

But of course, ironically, my two oldest daughters have decided that they’re going to be actresses.”

A health buff, Woody Harrelson complements his wife; she’s co-founder of Yoganics, a health-conscious food company.

Career

Woody Harrelson has been nominated for—and won—many awards since beginning his career in the 80s. His initial iconic roles were in “Cheers,” of course, and “White Men Can’t Jump” where he starred alongside actress Rosie Perez.

He’s been featured in everything from comedies to dramas. “Natural Born Killers,” “Indecent Proposal,” “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Seven Psychopaths” and “The Hunger Games” series are some of his most lauded efforts.

Another pair of Harrelson’s greatest hits are “Zombieland” and “Zombieland: Double Tap.”

He said, “I wrapped a movie called ‘Zombieland,’ in which I was constantly under assault by zombies, then flew to New York, still very much in character. With my daughter at the airport I was startled by a paparazzo, who I quite understandably mistook for a zombie.”

Harrelson is slated to be a part of “Venom 2,” which is scheduled to be released in 2020.

At present, Woody Harrelson net worth reached $65,000,000.

Favorite Quotes from Woody Harrelson

“I think people’s perception is that when you’re famous, you want people to love you. That’s a big part of why people become famous, because they don’t just want love, they want it on a grand scale. But once you realize – and it’s not a big trick to really figure it out – that it’s just completely artificial, an external pumping of the ego that’s never going to really help you, then it’s an easy thing to step out of it. That’s probably why Harrison Ford lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.”

“I admire people who just speak the truth.”

“My main hope for myself is to be where I am.”

“A grownup is a child with layers on.”

Tips for success from Woody Harrelson

  1. “The only way to get a serious message across is through comedy.”
  2. “I think my best skill in this whole deal is as a conduit to try to bring people together, because I think it’s in our unity that we’ll have the greatest strength.”
  3. “Raw food is the best way to have the cleanest energy. We take so much care about what kind of fuel we put in our car, what kind of oil. We care about that sometimes more than the fuel that we’re looking at putting in our bodies. It’s cleaner burning fuel.”
