Early Attempts

Back in Los Angeles, Anderson decided to try his hand at stand-up comedy. He was able to get a gig at the Comedy Act Theater.

He entered the stage with the announcement, “Tasty Tony, the one and only, and if there’s another, he’s a phony!” He was booed off the stage before he even got a word out.

Anderson was discouraged, but that night he also met Guy Torry, a fellow actor who was starting to make a name for himself.

Torry encouraged Anderson to keep trying comedy, saying that everyone bombs at the beginning. The two would later work together on the movie Life.

Small Roles

Anderson went on to get small parts in a series of movies. In 1999, he was cast in Liberty Heights. In 2000, he had small roles in Romeo Must DieBig Momma’s HouseUrban Legends and Me, Myself and Irene.

He began to get bigger roles over the years. He had a leading role in Kangaroo Jack and was later cast in My Baby’s DaddyHustle & FlowAgent Cody Banks 2: Destination London and King’s Ransom.

On Black-Ish, Laurence Fishburne plays Anderson’s father. In real life, Fishburne is only nine years older than Anderson.

Sexual Assault Allegations

Anderson has been accused of sexual assault on three separate occasions. In 2004, he and a member of the production crew were accused of raping a young woman on the set of Hustle & Flow. Anderson denied the allegations and the case was dropped.

The same year, another woman alleged that Anderson had attempted to rape her on the set of All About the Andersons. That case was dropped for lack of evidence.

In 2018, a third allegation surfaced. The Los Angeles Police Department conducted an investigation of this third allegation, but the state decided that there wasn’t enough evidence.
