Early Life

Charles Wade Barkley was born in Leeds, Alabama, on February 20, 1963. His parents were Frank Barkley and Charcey Glenn. Barkley had two brothers, John and Darryl.

While growing up, Barkley began to develop an interest in basketball but faced difficulty in succeeding due to his height.

While at Leeds High School, he was placed on the reserve spot of his high school basketball team because he was only 5’10.”

But while he was on reserve during his junior year, the following summer saw his height increase by six inches.

As a result of his growth spurt, he was able to become a starter on his high school team. While at Leeds High School, he led his team to the state semi-finals with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

At the semi-finals against Butler High School, Barkley scored 26 points and attracted the attention Sonny Smith, Auburn University’s head coach.

Personal Life

Barkley has been married to Maureen Blumhardt since 1989, and the couple has one daughter, Christiana, who was also born in 1989.

When the two married, Barkley was playing for Philadelphia and the interracial marriage between Maureen, who is white, and Barkley, who is black, upset some residents of the city.

At the time of their marriage, Maureen was working as a legal aide, but she has also worked as a model. While Charles Barkley tends to be very open about all of his opinions, Maureen prefers to keep a lower public profile.

Christiana has revealed through social media that she currently studies journalism at Columbia University.

Her famous father also revealed to USA Today that Christiana was a big fan of the Villanova basketball team. Barkley ended up cheering their team on during the championship game in her honor.

Barkley began his career playing for the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984. While there, he developed an important relationship with Moses Malone, who would serve as Barkley’s mentor. Malone would help Barkley get down to 275 pounds and into shape.

After Malone’s death, Barkley would tell ESPN that Malone was responsible for making Barkley the player that he became.

Barkley would go on to play for the Phoenix Suns beginning in 1992. It was during his career with the Phoenix Suns that Barkley made the most success in his career. During his career with the Suns, Barkley achieved all of the following career moments:
