“When people say, ‘How did you start in comedy,’ I say my family was kidnapped by ninjas when I was very young, and to get them released I had to do a killer five-minute set. And even after I did that, you know, I started doing comedy under tough circumstances, I still kept at it because I enjoyed it.”

“I just write and do what I think is funny. Sometimes, you do have it in your head about certain bits. There are certain jokes where I know if I did them in certain situations, it would irk people. There are times where I look at the news and see a story going on, and I’m like, ‘Wow if I tweeted this, I would get press if I wanted to.’”

Tips for success from Hannibal Buress

Laughter is the best medicine. If you can make someone laugh, you can completely change a situation from negative to a positive. Don’t take yourself too seriously and try to find joy in every situation.

Always be yourself. If you’re trying to be like other comedians or other people you’re always going to do a second-rate version because you are a second-rate version. You’re only allowed to be a first-rate version of yourself, so own it.

Take life day by day. You’re going to have battles some days, other days you’re going to have successes. You can’t take a bad attitude with you into a new day, it is a recipe for disaster.
