Early Life

Anderson had a difficult time coming into the world, which might explain why she is determined to live life to the fullest.

She was a twin, and she and her sister Aida were born three months early. At birth, they each weighed only one pound.

Both girls were diagnosed with a severe lung illness and doctors feared that they would have to be placed in respirators.

However, they both survived without that. Anderson went on to be very healthy, but her sister died when they was three years old.

A Family Talent

Shortly after this, Anderson’s father abandoned the family. In a 2012 interview, Anderson said, “My father walked out on us when Aida passed away, and I was raised by my mother. I always felt like a piece of me was missing.”

At the time, her mother was a singer who had experienced some success. As a single mother, Lyrica Garrett pursued her singing career in order to support herself and Anderson.

Lyrica Garrett, whose real name is Marcy Thomas, is a talented singer with amazing vocal ability. She grew up in Dallas and sang in the church choir.

As a teenager, she was taken in by Ike and Ina Turner who invited her to move to California as one of the Ikettes.

She eventually left the Ikettes and joined the psychedelic soul group The Undisputed Truth. In 2006, she reunited with Ike Turner on a concert tour where they sang Ike and Tina’s greatest hits.

It appears that music is a family talent. When Anderson was a little girl, her mother overheard her singing one day. She recognized that the girl had talent and began encouraging her to sing.
