Career
Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York ,to an Irish mother and an Irish-American father. He was the sixth of 11 children. His father worked on the railroads.
Move to Australia
When Mel was 12, his father appeared on the game show Jeopardy! and was the top winner. Gibson Sr. used his winnings to move the family to Australia, where he had family.
