Career

Gibson was unsure what he wanted to do with his life. He had always enjoyed acting and theater, but he did not think he was talented enough to make it a career.

His sister filled out an application in his name to the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Arts. Gibson was accepted and enrolled immediately. Two of his classmates were future stars Judy Davis and Geoffrey Rush.

Two Breakout Roles

Gibson had a successful career as a theater actor. He was cast in major roles and received excellent reviews.

Gibson got roles in two movies in 1979. He portrayed a young man with mental disabilities in the movie Tim, based on the novel by Colleen McCullough. He also starred in the low-budget film Mad Max.

Gibson won an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Best Actor award for his work in Tim. The AFI is equivalent to the Oscar in the U.S.

Mad Max was a breakout success. Critics and audiences took notice of the good-looking Australian with a commanding screen presence.

In 1981, he starred in Gallipoli. This role brought him his second AFI for Best Actor.

In 2004, Gibson produced and directed his Biblical epic Passion of the Christ. The movie was a box office hit and was nominated for three Academy Awards. At the same time, it raised enormous controversy.

Critics argued that its portrayal of the Bible story was anti-Semitic and historically inaccurate.

Gibson followed up in 2006 with another historical epic, Apocalypto, which was about the arrival of colonial settlers to early Mesoamerica. Some critics consider this his best movie as a director.

After releasing Apocalypto, Gibson was involved in a series of highly publicized events that included a drunken fight with a police officer, controversial statements about gay people and Jews, an arrest for domestic abuse and other problems.

Gibson’s wife Robyn Moore filed for separation in 2006.
