His mother moved away soon after YoungBoy’s father was incarcerated, leaving YoungBoy and his older sister and younger brother to be raised by their grandmother. As a teenager, he attended Scotlandville Magnet High School. However, he dropped out just before his freshman year to focus on a music career.

A microphone purchased at Walmart at the age of 14 helped to inspire YoungBoy’s music, but he had been writing songs since the age of about seven. His mother also was a rapper before she married and had children.

Dropping out of high school may have given the YoungBoy NBA the time he wanted to pursue music, but he needed money to buy time in a recording studio. He turned to crime to get the money he needed, being arrested for robbery soon afterward.

He served a term at the detention center in Tallulah. Determined to realize his musical ambitions, he began writing lyrics while incarcerated.

NBA YoungBoy does not have contact with his incarcerated father, but his mother is in his life. He also is close to his older sister Telee and his younger brother Kendell.

The maternal grandmother who raised him died a few years ago. Fortunately, YoungBoy Never Broke Again has several incredibly close friends from childhood who are like a family to him today.

The most high-profile incident occurred on February 25, 2018, when police were called to intervene in an apparent physical confrontation. Officers responding to the scene noted blood on several surfaces, but Jania denied that she had been beaten.

YoungBoy spent nearly a month in jail in connection with charges such as kidnapping and a weapons violation.

Career
