How Did Nicky Jam Make His Money?

Most of his money has come from album sales and concert tours. Nicky Jam is one of the most popular and successful Spanish-language singer-songwriters in the world.

His husky voice, sexy bad-boy image, and beautiful pop tunes have made him a commercial and fan favorite.

Nicky Jam made his mark in the popular style known as reggaetón, which is a blend of reggae, hip-hop and Latin rhythms.

His specific talent has been to mix the distinctive style of this Latin street music with smooth, upbeat pop melodies and danceable hooks.

The combination has made his songs popular to a wide audience.

He has also appeared as an actor in four movies.

Early Life

Although he was born in Boston, his father was from Puerto Rico and the family moved there when Nicky was 10 years old. His parents were both alcoholics and drug addicts.

His family was very poor, so he took a job under the table at a grocery store to help them out. While working, he would sing his own compositions.

He later said that a homeless man who used to sit outside the store gave him the nickname “Nicky Jam.” He said he didn’t like the nickname, but stuck with it because everyone called him that.

One day, a record executive was in the store. He heard Nicky singing and offered him a record deal. The executive did not realize how young he was. Nicky Jam was only 14 when he released his first album, …Distinto A Los Demás.

Career

His first album did not have any hits, but it caught the attention of several leading music producers including DJ Joe, DJ Playero and DJ Chiklin.

Through these producers, he met and befriended fellow reggaetón artist Daddy Yankee, who was enjoying some early fame at that point.

They began performing together as a duo called Los Cangris. The name came from a Puerto Rican slang term meaning “big shots.”

Together, they produced a string of hit singles and were in high demand as a touring act.

In 2001, Nicky Jam released his second album, Haciendo Escante. Vida Escante followed in 2004. In 2004, his friendship with Daddy Yankee ended, and they stopped working together.

In a later interview, Nicky Jam blamed himself for this, saying that he had been too young, too unprofessional and too consumed by drugs and alcohol to be a good business partner.

Move to Colombia

In 2005, his troubles with addiction caught up with him. He was arrested after a live performance in Puerto Rico.

After he was released, he had difficulty getting record deals and was essentially shut out of the music industry. In 2007, he was given an offer to tour in Colombia and decided to move there.

He has since said that the move saved his life and his career. He arrived broke, addicted and discarded by the music industry. Once there, he went into rehab, began touring heavily and started writing songs again.

Favorite Quotes From Nicky Jam

“To me, what’s special about reggaetón is that the rhythm is contagious. You hear it and you just start tapping your feet. It doesn’t matter what the words are. It doesn’t even matter if you like it. Like it or not, you’re going to start dancing.”

Nicky Jam Success Tips

“If you’re given the opportunity to live your life without drugs or alcohol, take that opportunity. Get that stuff out of your life. Take it from someone like me who lost everything, my money, my self-respect, my success, and my sanity. You can live without it.”
