Preston Roberts was a lovable character on the American reality TV show called “Mountain Men.” He was a woodsman, artist, educator and environmentalist until the day that he died.

He was a teacher who loved being out in the wilderness and loved educating others about Turtle Island, where he lived. Sadly, Roberts life was cut short.

He had an inoperable tumor on his liver and died at 60 years old in 2017.

Early Life

Preston Roberts was born on July 17, 1957, in North Carolina and grew up in the small town of Brevard. A nature lover even at a young age, Preston grew up exploring the Pisgah National Forest.

He later moved to Wilkes County, where he met his now-famous friend and former costar, Eustace Conway.

After graduating from high school, Preston attended Atlantic Christian College. He also later attended Appalachian State University.

Personal life

Preston Roberts grew up in North Carolina and that’s where he wanted to spend his life, so he did. In 1975, he met the love of his life, Kathleen Dupont, who later became his wife.

Roberts is well known for reinterpreting the popular quote “behind every good man is a good woman,” changing it instead and saying, “beside every good man is a good woman.” They had three children together.

Early on in their marriage, Preston and Kathleen lived in a small log cabin on the East Fork River. They then lived on a prairie research station in North Dakota.

Later, they lived in a remodeled barn while Preston finished his studies at Atlantic Christian College. While he finished his art degree, the family even lived in a teepee!

However, for the past thirty years, Preston and his wife lived in an old rehabbed church near Stone Mountain State Park.

They also have 90 acres on Turtle Island, the scene for the show “Mountain Men.”

Roberts was a teacher in the Wilkes County School System for 25 years, even earning the award of “Teacher of the Year” twice by his colleagues.

Career

Preston Roberts never intended to get into television, in fact, it was something that he stumbled upon through his friendship with Eustace Conway.

Roberts had a passion for teaching children and earned his degree in art education. He was well-known and well-liked in the Wilkes County School system where he earned the honor of “Educator of the Year” on two separate occasions. He taught in the school district for 25 years.

Besides his work as a teacher, Roberts also spent time working as a community educator, specifically focusing on Appalachian culture and environment.

He also was a skilled craftsman, making knives that sold for $250 or more.

He started working on the History Channel’s popular television show “Mountain Men” in 2012 and continued to work on it until his death in 2017.

He was featured on the show because he worked on Turtle Island Preserve with Conway.

Roberts also spent time working as a singer and a traditional Native American dancer.
