Pacino was born in 1940 to Salvatore and Rose Pacino. His parents divorced when he was two years old, and he and his mother moved to the Bronx to live with his grandparents.

Early Life

Pacino was unhappy at home and school. He started smoking and drinking when he was 13.

Still Struggling

Despite his successes on stage, Pacino still struggled financially. He later recounted that he and his then-girlfriend Jill Clayburgh had to rely on financial help from her father.

That changed when he met Martin Bregman, a talent manager who saw him perform in a play. Bregman convinced Pacino to go into movies.

Pacino didn’t want to, but Bregman convinced him that doing so would give his finances and his career a much-needed boost.

The Godfather

With Bregman’s encouragement, Pacino started getting movie roles. He appeared in the 1971 movie Panic in Needle Park. This movie brought him to the attention of key Hollywood directors.

Among them was Francis Ford Coppola, who asked Pacino to star as Michael Corleone in The Godfather. Coppola chose him over Warren Beatty, Robert Redford and Jack Nicholson, who all wanted the role.

This role ended up defining Pacino as an actor and a star. The movie was a box office smash. It is regularly cited as one of the greatest movies of its decade.

Pacino received his first Academy Award nomination for his work.

Pacino’s next major, career-defining role was in Brian DePalma’s 1983 movie Scarface. He played the Cuban drug dealer Tony Montana in a role that brought him a whole new set of fans.
