Early Life

ASAP Ferg’s real name is Darold D. Brown Ferguson Jr. He was born on October 20, 1988, in the Harlem, New York City. The 5’10” rapper’s parents are Trinidadian.

His father is Darold Ferguson and he was a Harlem boutique owner. He would print logos and shirts for record labels such as Bad Boy Records and luminaries including Heavy D, Beel Biv DeVoe, and Teddy Riley.

Unfortunately, Ferg’s father died of kidney failure right before Ferg’s 17th birthday. He inspired ASAP Ferg to attend art school and start his very own line of apparel and jewelry while he was still quite young. In 2005, he created his own apparel line called Devoni Clothing.

Some of the famous names that have supported his line include Chris Brown, Swizz Beatz, and Diggy Simmons. Through Ferg’s apparel line he would design and distribute high-end belts.

ASAP Ferg and ASAP Rocky were high school friends and when they started rapping they became group members of ASAP Mob when they became professionals.

Career

Before Ferg got into music, he wanted to has his own clothing line to follow in his late father’s footsteps.

He had real plans for being a fashion designer. In 2009 Ferg was already creating aggressive trap music.

Ferg explained that to trap means to hustle. He says he started out painting, began making clothes, and then moved on to rap.

He says he has always given his projects 100%. He wants to perfect everything and make it a success. He also says they call him Trap Lord because of his outstanding hustle game.

ASAP Rocky first picked up on Ferg’s hustle game and encouraged him to keep sharpening his rap skills. The two working together on songs including “Kissin’ Pink”, “Get High”, and “Ghetto Symphony”.

In 2011 Ferg penned a deal with A$AP Mob, A$AP Rocky, and the late A$AP Yams. In 2012 Ferg’s debut single “Work” released on the A$AP Mob mixtape “Lords Never Worry”.

The music video for this song gained more than 2 million views and Complex Magazine listed it as one of the 50 best tracks of the year. This track was produced by Chinza and Fly.

In 2013 Ferg joined with Polo Grounds and RCA Records. Two of his ASAP Mob partners ASAP Rocky and ASAP Yams had already negotiated a deal back in 2011.

That same year 2013, Ferg dropped a remix to “Work” which featured A$AP Rocky, French Montana, Schoolboy Q, and Trinidad James. That fall he released his debut album “Trap Lord” which featured rap groups Onyx, and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.

His album was well received and debuted at the 9th spot on the Billboard 200 chart. It sold 46,000 copies in the U.S. At the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards Ferg was named Rookie of the year.

In 2014 he was featured on Ariana Grande’s second album “My Everything”. He could be heard on the track “Hands on Me”.

In 2015 Ferg’s video for the “Dope Walk” single was released. This song was from his “Ferg Forever” mixtape he put out in 2014.

He also coined a viral dance called dope walk and released a video that was completely made from iPhone footage during New York Fashion Week. The video featured models and cameos from various celebrities.

Later in 2015 Ferg directed rapper Future’s “Thought It Was a Drought” video. During an interview with The Source, he mentioned that his upcoming album was going to be his best project thus far, and this album bears a lot of his truth.

In the spring of 2016 Ferg’s second studio album “Always Strive And Prosper” was released. The very first single “New Level” featured Future and was certified gold by the RIAA.

In the fall, Ferg and Playboi Carti went on the Turnt & Burnt tour where they put on 23 performances. In the summer of 2017, Ferg and singer Ally Brooke was featured on the “Look At Us Now” single which was a track put out by Lost Kings.
