Chaka Khan was born in Chicago, Illinois, as Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23rd, 1953 to Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman.

Raised in Chicago’s Hyde Park area with four siblings; three sisters Zaheva, Yvonne, and Tammy and a brother named Mark, Chaka developed an interest in music when she was very young after being introduced to jazz by her grandmother.

In addition, she also was involved — as a youngster — in the civil rights movement and she and her stepmother joined the Black Panther Party.

She attended Calumet and Kenwood High Schools and began performing around the Chicago area with small groups until she was spotted by the band Rufus in 1972.

Chaka released her first album with Rufus at the age of 20, and a year later they won their first Grammy award. Then a few years after that Chaka went solo and released her first self-titled album.

After that, she released several more albums throughout her career including “The Woman I am”, “Echoes of an Era”, and “Funk This”.

Chaka was married twice in her lifetime and has two children. She first was married at the age of 17 to “Hassan Khan” in 1970, but their marriage ended in a brief separation.

After that Chaka found herself in another relationship with “Rahsaan Morris” and together the couple had a daughter they named, “Indira Milini”.

Later Chaka was married a second time in 1976, to Richard Holland and they too had a child; a son named “Damien”. Damien was tried for homicide in 2006 when he was blamed for killing 17-year-old “Christopher Bailey” who was shot dead at a gathering at the Khan residence.

In 1980 Khan and Holland separated for the second time and she moved to London.

Chaka currently has two grandchildren; “Raeven Khan” from her daughter Indira Milini and “Daija Jade Holland” via her son Damien Holland.

Chaka Khan is considered a symbol in the music business, she has released 12 studio album collections that made it to the top of the music charts for which she received numerous honors.

She is currently living with Doug Rasheed.
