First Jobs in Washington
She accepted a job as a staff assistant for Rep. Scott McInnis (R-CO) and later as a speechwriter for Rep. Dan Schaefer (R-CO).
In 1998, Perino and her husband moved to the U.K. for his work. When they returned in 2001, she got a job as a press representative at the Department of Justice.
In 2005, Perino joined the White House staff as the associate director of communications for the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). During her tenure, the CEQ was criticized by Democratic lawmakers for placing the White House’s favored positions over scientific policy.

Becoming the Press Secretary
Perino was then hired as the deputy communications director for the White House. About a year after she was hired, press secretary Tony Snow had to take a leave from his position to get treatment for colon cancer.
During his leave, Perino filled in as the acting press secretary. When Snow announced that he was resigning for health reasons, Perino stepped into the position. She served in the Bush administration for the rest of Bush’s term.
Shoe Incident
In a famous 2008 incident, Perino and Bush were holding a press conference in Baghdad when an Iraqi journalist threw two shoes at the president.
Bush ducked, but Perino was hit by the microphone that the shoes knocked over. She recovered quickly, but the press and her colleagues teased her about it for a long time.
