Swae Lee (26) and Slim Jxmmi (28), also known as Khalif Brown and Aaquil Brown, are from Tupelo, Mississippi. The brothers were raised by a single mother, as their father abandoned the family when they were young.
Before they were signed to a label, the brothers performed at parties and venues within the Tupelo, Mississippi area. After performing at parties and venues for several years, they developed their first music group called “Dem Outta State Boyz.”
They started uploading videos onto online platforms such as Youtube and Soundcloud in order to attract fans and gain recognition. After performing as a group, the brothers moved to Atlanta, Georgia to work with the record producer Mike WiLL Made It.
The brothers signed a contract with Mike WiLL Made It join his record label EarDrummers Entertainment. This is when they became known as Rae Sremmurd, which is Ear Drummers spelled backward.
Personal life
Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi spent the majority of their childhood moving around due to their mother’s job in the Army. They lived in California, Maryland, Texas, and finally settled in Tupelo, Mississippi.
When the brothers were very young, their father abandoned them and forced their mother to become a single parent. Both Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi currently reside in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
They continue to be signed to Mike WiLL Made Its record label EarDrummers Entertainment. The brothers frequently collaborate with other musicians, most notably Gucci Mane who they wrote and performed their hit track “Black Beatles.”

Career
These boys were playing under the name Dem Outta State Boyz, but they soon decided that they should move to Atlanta to jump-start their career.
There are many major hip hop artists in Atlanta, and they found a producer who was willing to help them.
They started with producer Mike Will Made It, and they signed their first deal with Ear Drummers Entertainment.
They chose their name based on the contract that they signed as a way to honor the people who gave them a chance.
The boys chose to name their band Rae Sremmurd by spelling the name of their record label backward. That name has stuck all these years later, and they started work with the label on their first two albums.
The first two albums that they made with the label were not marketed very well, and they were not as successful as the boys thought they could be. Because of this, they needed to make a change.
Their first hit single was called “No Flex Zone.” It was released in 2014, and it reached 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
That alone was enough to get people to pay attention, and they followed that up with the single called “No Type.” “No Type” went to 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it allowed them to the popularity they needed to release Sremmlife and Sremmlife 2 through Ear Drummers.
They also released Balck Beatles in 2015 while remaining with their original label. They have taken pride in honoring the label that gave them a chance, and they are currently working on new music while playing live dates to support their previous albums.
