Philanthropy

In 2002, he established the Tony Hawk Foundation as a way to establish safe, legal skateboarding areas in cities across the country.

Skateboarding had long been regarded as dangerous, because skateboarders used empty pools, abandoned buildings and other unsafe places.

Hawk felt that skateboarding would get more public support if skateboarders had safe, legal places to practice the sport. Since then, his foundation has granted over $6 million to build almost 600 skateboard parks.
