In 1998, he had his breakthrough role when he was cast as detective James Carter in the action comedy Rush Hour. He starred with Chinese martial arts hero Jackie Chan.

Rush Hour was a huge hit, smashing box office records and making stars of the two leads. The success of the movie led to Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3.

After seeing how well the movies did, Tucker asked for a $20 million salary to star in Rush Hour 3. That was a huge amount for an actor who had only made a handful of movies.
