How Did Tony Beets Make His Money?

Tony Beets is a well-known miner, gold prospector, and reality TV star. Beets is currently working his mine while making plans to open a second one.

Beets was born in the Netherlands to a farming family. When he was still a child, his father died. Beets had to take over the family farm to keep the family together and keep a roof over their heads.

He had to develop a strong work ethic that sticks with him now. Even as a child, however, he always dreamed of doing better in his future.

In 1983, he moved his family to Canada. He was married with two children at the time. He was hoping to build a better life for his family.

Beets got work as a heavy machine operator. He was making a good salary, but he still thought there were better opportunities out there.

Tamarack Mine

The following year, he opened his own mining operation called Tamarack Mine. He, his wife Minnie and his three children all went to work prospecting and mining.

In a 2018 interview, his daughter Monica said that her father believed women could run any machine that a man could, but he always insisted that only men pick up or move the really heavy machinery.

She described him as a mix of “old-fashioned and progressive” and added that she greatly admired his work ethic and his ability to stay focused on the job he was doing despite setbacks and frustrations.

In 2010, the hard work and success of this family came to the attention of executives at the Discovery Channel. They met with Beets and discussed the possibility of his appearing on the Gold Rush reality show. He has been on it ever since.

The Viking

Beets is described by his family as a down-to-earth, hardworking man who is proud of his Dutch heritage. Some of his friends have nicknamed him “the Viking.”

He is also known for his imposing looks. He wears his hair long, with a long, full beard and large glasses.

He looks, in fact, just like the pictures of old-time prospectors in books about the California Gold Rush. It’s all part of his image, and it all works for him and his fans.

A Valuable Asset

Beets became popular almost instantly for his no-nonsense approach, strong work ethic, and colorful swearing. He also proved to be a valuable asset to the show for his deep mining knowledge.

During the show’s second season, Beets came up with the idea of drilling test holes before digging up a mine.

That became an accepted practice among many miners on the show During the fourth season, he worked as a valuable guide and mentor to Parker Schnabel.

It was Schnabel’s first year as a miner, and he ended up being one of the most successful miners on the show.

Say Yes to Cussing

In 2018, his daughter Monica was married and the wedding was filmed for the show. Before the wedding, her search for a dress was featured on the reality show Say Yes to the Dress.

Monica wanted both of her parents to help her choose a dress. Tony was told that if he wanted to appear, he had to watch his language.

During the show, he is shown saying, “Before coming here, Minnie and Monica made me look at a couple of episodes, and they said, ‘You have to be on your best behavior here.’ So today, I’m pretty much going to be on my best f***ing behavior.”
