Early Life

Born in Silver Spring Maryland in 1973, Dave Chappelle attended Woodlin Elementary School. He was born into a long line of educators.

His father, William David Chappelle III, worked as a statistician and later a professor at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and, his mother, Yvonne K. Chappelle Seon, was a professor at several higher education institutions, such as Howard University.

His great-grandfather, Bishop William D. Chappelle (the first of his name), served as the president of Allen University. After his parents parted ways, he stayed in Washington with his mother and spent the summer months with his father in Ohio.

Chappelle converted to Islam in 1998. He speaks highly of the Islamic faith; however, he does not like to speak publicly about his religion as he does not want to people to associate Islam with his own shortcomings.

In 2001, he married his long-time girlfriend, Elaine Mendoza Erfe. His marriage is an interracial relationship as he is of African American descent and his wife is of Filipino descent.
