Early Life
DMX was born as Earl Simmons on December 18, 1970, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Joe Barker and Arnett Simmons. However, soon after he was born, the family relocated to Yonkers, New York, where he was raised.
His childhood could be described as violent and chaotic as his father left when DMX was very young and his mother was abusive. This led to Earl having to survive on the streets after trying group homes during his teen years.
He also started using drugs and alcohol at a young age, causing many run-ins with the law, which were often violent and led to him being in and out of prison. However, above all DMX had one thing going for him, his music.

He started out beatboxing while he DJ’d in small hip hop clubs before later moving on to rap.

Also known as “Dark Man X”, DMX married Tashera Simmons in 1999, and the couple supposedly had four children together; Xavier, Shawn, Tocoma, and Praise Mary Ella. However, in 2010 DMX got the news that some of the kids were not his, and after 11 years of marriage, the couple got divorced that same year.
After the divorce, DMX began dating Desiree Lindstrom and the two have a son together named Exodus.
Back in 2013, DMX filed for bankruptcy due to owing a large sum of money between $1 million and $10 million to different creditors.

In 1992, DMX signed a record contract with Ruffhouse, a subsidiary of Columbia and “Born Loser” was released, which was his debut single.
This seemed promising for DMX, but the company under-promoted his single and soon he was released from his contract.
In 1994, his second single was released, “Make a Move“; however, soon after he was arrested for drug charges.
Three years later, in 1997, he signed with Def Jam and made some guest appearances with artists “Mase” and “LL Cool J” and the following year released his third single, “Get at Me Dog“.

He released his debut album in May 1998 that soon became number one on the pop charts.
