Bow Wow dropped the “Lil'” from his stage name in April 2002; he told MTV News: “I changed my name because I’m getting older now and it’s too many Lil’s.

All these Lil’ rappers, I’m just kind of getting real irritated by it. I said, ‘You know what? Drop the Lil’. Forget it. I’m Bow Wow. Besides, I’m growing up, I’m not little anymore. [I just decided that] two weeks ago.

Early Life

Bow Wow was born in Columbus, Ohio and is the son of Teresa Rena Caldwell and Alfonso Preston Moss. When Bow Wow was three years old, he showed great interest in music and rap.

A great fan of N.W.A., he used the moniker of “Kid Gangsta” and started rapping for fun at six years old. His life changed in 1993 when Snoop Dogg noticed him during a concert in Los Angeles.

He nicknamed him “Lil’ Bow Wow.” When he turned eleven, he met with record producer, Jermaine Dupri, and began to develop his career under his wing.

In 1999, Bow Wow was featured on the Wild Wild West soundtrack with the song “The Stick Up.” “Bounce With Me” is debut single featured popular R&B female group, Xscape.

Snoop Dogg also made a guest appearance on Bow Wow’s album on the song, “Bow Wow (That’s My Name.)” His first album, Beware of the Dog, became double platinum in 2001, indicating a sales record of two million copies.

He has stated in interviews that his daughter is old enough to have a relationship with him without involving the mother. In 2012, Bow Wow was ordered to pay $3,000 per month in child support.

However, he claimed that he was only making $4,000 per month and could not afford such high payments. Allegedly, he stated having on $1,500 in his checking account.

Bow Wow, later, admitted to making such statements out of personal convenience and denied being broke. Bow Wow briefly dated and was engaged to long-time friend Erica Mena, a model and reality TV star.

However, the couple’s relationship fizzled out after Mena suffered from a miscarriage and brought the news to social media. In 2018, Bow Wow received backlash for posting a picture of private jet, implying that he was flying private.

Over the year, Bow Wow has been accused of trolling and lying to cause controversy as a means of getting attention. In 2019, he was arrested in Atlanta for battery after fighting with a girlfriend.

Both suffered minor injuries, but the aggressor was not clear to the police. Bow Wow was released on $8,000 bond.

After over ten years in the industry, Bow Wow planned to release his album on Cash Money Records, but the album was delayed. Then, in 2011, he announced online that the record would not be by the end of the year.
