Early Life
Nas (Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones) was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 14, 1973. Olu Dara (Charles Jones III), his father, is a jazz and blues artist from Mississippi, and his mother (Fannie Ann) worked as a postal service worker in North Carolina.
His father renamed himself “Olu Dara” as in Yoruba. Additionally, the name “Nasir” means “helper and protector” in Arabic, and “bin” means the “son of.” When Nas was a young boy, he and his family relocated to the Queensbridge Houses in Queens.

While he lived on Long Island City, he met Willy (Ill Will) Graham who later played hip hop records for him and influenced his interest in the genre. In 1985, Olu Dara and Fannie Ann divorced. Consequently, he dropped out of the eighth grade.
He later joined the Five Percent Nation. As a teen, Nas started writing his own rhymes and played the trumpet like his father.
Personal Life
On June 15, 1994, Nas’s ex Carmen Bryan gave birth to Nas’s first child, Destiny. Carmen was also known for having a relationship with his former rival rapper Jay-Z.

This relationship caused a large rift between the two rappers, leading to subliminal messages in songs and rap beef. Nas also dated Mary J. Blige for a brief time. In 2005, he married I Hate You So Much Right Now Singer, Kelis, after a two-year relationship.
Four years later, Kelis filed for divorce under irreconcilable differences. In the same year of the divorce filing, Kelis gave birth to Nas’s son, Knight. In the following year, the divorce was finalized.
