Early Life

Lamar graduated as an honor student from Centennial High School in Compton. While he was still in school, he put together a mixtape called Youngest Head Nigga in Charge.

The mixtape received positive attention from local artists and producers. In 2004, he signed with Top Dawg Entertainment. He released his second mixtape in 2005.

At the time, he was performing with the stage name K-Dot. He began appearing on albums and videos with leading hip hop artists including Lil Wayne and The Game.

Name Change

In 2009, he released his third mixtape, C4. He also decided to start using his real name instead of K-Dot. In 2010, he released his first album as Kendrick Lamar, The Kendrick Lamar EP.

He also formed Black Hippy, a hip hop supergroup that included Lamar, Jay Rock ScHoolboy and Ab-Soul.

Working with Dr. Dre

In 2010, Lamar was touring with other hip hop artists and had released a new mixtape. Dr. Dre saw the video for his song “Ignorance is Bliss” on YouTube and contacted Lamar. He wanted to include Lamar on the album he was producing with Snoop Dogg.
