Early Life

Nelly was born as Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr. on November 2, 1974. While he was born in Austin, Texas, he is known for his time in St. Louis, Missouri.

Nelly was named after his father, Cornell Iral Haynes, Sr. who served in the US army. When he was seven years old, his parents divorced, which led him to split his time between Missouri and Texas.

When Nelly was 21 years old, he became a part of the hip hop group, the St. Lunatics; their song, “Gimme What Ya Got” became a radio hit.

Personal life

While Nelly keeps his personal life very private, he has been linked with a few women. He has been dating Shantel since April 2014. Nelly previously dated the Grammy-award-winning R&B singer Ashanti for a few years.

He also was known to date Nicole Narain and Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child. In his spare time, Nelly prioritizes his philanthropy work. He runs 4Sho4Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

The goal of the campaign was to educate black people and other minorities about bone marrow transparents and register more donors within the community.

Donahue died in 2005, two years after the campaign’s inception. In 2006, Nelly hosted the “White and Black Ball” in St. Louis to collect funds for scholarships; he named the scholarship after Michael Brown who was shot and killed.

Nelly started his career in 2000 with hit album, Country Grammar. Hits from the album include: “Country Grammar” “Ride Wit Me” and “EI.” A couple of years later, Nelly released his second studio album called Nellyville.

Even though Nellyville was not as successful as Country Grammar, it did exceptionally well on the market, selling millions of copies internationally.
