Career

Shelton was born in Ada, Oklahoma to Richard and Dorothy Shelton. He grew up in the nearby town of Tishomingo.

His mother was a beautician, and his father sold used cars. At the age of 12, he asked his uncle to teach him to play guitar.

Even at an early age, he knew he wanted a career as a singer.

Move to Nashville

Shelton moved to Nashville when he was 17. Like thousands of Nashville hopefuls, he got a job to pay the bills while he auditioned at nightclubs and tried to get a record deal.

First Contract

After about six years, he had his first contract with Giant Records. He released his debut album, Blake Shelton, in 2002.

The single from that album, “Austin,” spent five weeks at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot Country 100. The album was certified platinum.
